July 2013 Goals

Shame on me.  In case you guys didn’t notice, I didn’t have the heart to make up a set of goals for last month.  For some reason the month of June was a pretty depressing month.  I’m not sure why, perhaps it was the fact that I had to file for an unemployment extension, which was a big smack in the face to me on how I still hadn’t found a job.  Perhaps it was not getting any callbacks whatsoever from the schools to which I applied so there goes one full year after college of not finding a teaching job. Meh.

The month of June was either sunny, or downright dismal with rain.  And on the sunny days, it was blistering hot and more humid than anyone can stand.  My poor pups could only be about for five minutes or less without looking like they were about to suffer from heatstroke.  I wanted to go biking, or running… anything to get more active, but the heat or the rain kept me away.  More like my depressed state in the month of June, but golly.. I hadn’t figured that June could come with some pretty heavy blues.

July is a new month however, and I’m going to make it easy for me this month.  If I get through all of these goals, I’ll just continue working on the 101 things to do in 1001 days project.

Money Goals

  • Find a few ways for this Rainy Day blog to make some funds, however small it may be…
  • Find a new way of making money.
  • Take new commissions and finish in a timely manner.  3/5 Slots still open.  Comment or Message me for details!
  • Sell unneeded items on ebay and amazon to make extra $.
  • To make enough money this month to pay my car payment ($301).
  • To spend less than $150 on me.
  • To find a job.

Since this month consists of the 4th of July, and my mother’s birthday, it’s going to be a bit of a month.  SO, I’m upgrading the budget to $150 this month.

Rainy Day Goals

  • Convert my brother’s, my guy’s, and my own music to the existing external hard drive for easy access.
  • Organize my dvd/blu-ray collection.
  • Get rid of at LEAST 20 items this month, via selling, donation, or throw-away.
  • To continue organizing my room for optimal business format/personal use.
  • Use my organizer.

Because the graduation party is only in a month, I really have to step up my game on getting the house ready as well as my room.  There will be family staying over the night of the graduation and even the graduation party night, so my room will be associated as makeshift hotel room for that weekend and I’ll probably have a couch downstairs.  So, that means A LOT of cleaning and organizing in my future!  I have a feeling I need to make a pretty awesome playlist for motivation soon.

Personal Goals

  • Be consistent on MyFitnessPal
  • Start the BodyRock Beginner’s Challenge
  • Borrow my brother’s bike and use that to go around town once this month.
  • Participate in Move Your Ass Challenge
  • Blow my 50 mile goal for MYAC out of the water.
  • Lose 20 pounds.

Think I can do it?

Rainy Day Investing 101 – Define Your Goals

Well, it’s about time for me throw together a new post series for Rainy Day Saving. Since I’m planning on investing in various means, I figured I’d share you my journey and the information that I have found to be helpful for me.

So to begin, I want you to know a little about me.  I am a conservative type of person when it comes to money, as I always try to have a mental line that I refuse to cross when it comes to my bank account balance.  I know that when I get close to crossing that line, I am either a) spending too much or b) things are not financially going well with my job/life that is causing problems and threatening to break the bank.

Next, I have both short term and long term goals.  I’ll define these in a little bit, as this is the main key to this post today, but I feel that this is perhaps the biggest thing that one needs to do to begin your investing future.  If you do not know what you want to get out of your money, then you’ll never be able to find the necessary track(s) that is right for you.  So, as I believe that the first step in having a smart investment plan is knowing exactly for what you’re saving.  Again, my goals may not be exact to yours, in fact, I guarantee it, but you never know.  You might also be in a different stage of goals than where I am.  For example, one of my major goals right now is to pay off my car loan and my student loans within the next five years.  You might already be finished with paying off your student loan debt, or never had it in the first place, OR you may one of those who are needing a longer period of time to pay that nasty student loan off because you already have a family to care for, or a new spouse/child.

Some common goals:

  • buying a new car
  • putting a down payment on a home
  • paying off one’s student loan debt
  • saving for a child’s college education
  • ensuring a comfortable retirement

Now all of these have a investment time horizon.  That means, they all have a time-clock on them.  A new car will probably be a short-term goal, whereas retirement may be a long-term goal for you. To be a little more specific:

Short term goals: Expenses that may occur in less than 2 years.

Intermediate-term goals: Financial objectives that are roughly 3-10 years away.

Long-term goals: Goals with the longest time frame – 11 years or more.

Alright, now that we’ve got that out of the picture, here’s a little homework for you.  I know, I know, I really have say over what you do, but I guess it’s the teacher in me (I have a couple of degrees and a license to prove it).  Now, I want you to make a list of your goals.  This includes all three categories.  Where do you want to see yourself financially in 5 years? 10? 20?  Are there any big investments that you want to make sure you do in the next few years: get married? buy a car? a house?  Think about it.  Write it down.  This is the first step for your financial future.  If you have a spouse/fiance/significant other, bring them into the conversation. It might get a little heavy, yes.. money is never a pleasant topic, but it does need to be tackled.  The more efficiently you do so now, by making these goals, the better off you will be.

So in case you need some inspiration (and for my own benefit), here are my own goals (with a little bit of my guy’s help).

Short-term goals

  • pay off my car loan
  • pay off my credit cards
  • have 1/4-1/3 of my student loans paid off
  • get married

Intermediate-term goals

  • have 20% (or more) ready for a down payment on a house
  • become a landlord
  • (possibly) go to graduate school
  • have children
  • be able to take family vacations

Long-term goals

  • be able to financially help my mother (so that she can quit/retire her job and live comfortably).
  • retire with a secure cushion
  • travel/research

Obviously, since I’m only 25 my long term goals are um… lacking at the moment.  However, I think that all of those are decent enough to be honest.  I hope that I can accomplish them in my lifetime, as they all seem doable.  What about you? Have you done your “homework” yet?

Goals for May 2013

Pretty simple this month, as you can tell I’m already in the swing of things in the clutter-busting area, so let’s see what else I can do!

  • To make enough money this month to pay my car payment ($301) AND half of my June car insurance money.
  • To spend less than $200 on me.
  • To find a job.

Since this month consists of a combined bachelor party, a wedding, my guy’s birthday AND graduation, it’s going to be a bit of a month.  SO, I’m upgrading the budget to $200 this month.

  • Hack my journal into an accessible planner/organizer.
  • Go through my books and see what items I will sell/donate.
  • Continue to get the house ready for a graduation party (my brother’s).

  • Consistent posts for Rainy Day & restart Gamer Talk.
  • Add a Paypal button for tips or purchases on this blog and Gamer Talk for donations.
  • Create logos/banners for both blogs.
  • Add artwork to various art sites and sell my artwork online.
  • Continue my art blog.
  • Refine my gamer podcast and restart it.
  • Participate in Move Your Ass Challenge
  • Blow my 50 mile goal for MYAC out of the water.
  • Lose 20 pounds.

I had just under 25 miles for the MYAC last month, so it’s time to double it.  Also, because I am participating in a daily challenge, I’m going to be posting to Rainy Day almost every day of the week this month to make sure that not only is my regular posting schedule not being forgotten, but my accountability on this challenge will be as well.

Think I can do it?

Goal Achievement Report – April 2013

Alright, let’s see what I was able to accomplish!

Money Goals

  • Find a few ways for this Rainy Day blog to make some funds, however small it may be…
  • Find a new way of making money.
  • Finish last commission on list and take new ones (5).
  • Sell unneeded items on ebay and amazon to make extra $.
  • To make enough money this month to pay my car payment ($301) AND half of my June car insurance money.
  • To spend less than $100 on me.
  • To find a job.

Watching the comic book shop for my friend went great!  In fact, I was able to save over $90 worth of comic books thanks to my great friend and the deal he offered to me.  In case you’re reading this, thanks again so much!  I think that although I wasn’t being handed cash, this qualifies in finding a new way to make some monetary gain as I am completely square with my subscription list now at the comic book shop. While I was there, I was able to finish my last commission and will have it sent out to my buddy in Baltimore by the end of this week.  I want to be sure that I scan it and add it onto my online portfolio.

Sadly, Amazon and Ebay have been very neglectful to my piggy bank this month.  To give you an idea, only 5 items sold from my Amazon shop in the past two weeks.  That’s it!  Man is it driving me nuts!  HOWEVER! I only $79.21 this month!  That means I was under my $100 goal and all is well!

I also have an interview on Monday for a potential lucrative job, and was asked for further information from another possible employer this week as well.  So.. keeping my fingers crossed!

  • Hack my journal into an accessible planner/organizer.
  • Go through my books and see what items I will sell/donate.
  • Start to get the house ready for a graduation party (my brother’s).

The only one that has been done on this list is the last one.  I’ve been so dedicated to cleaning, organizing, and painting to get ready for the graduation party that I haven’t done much else.  A lot of household chores are getting done instead, and a lot of my own “goals” are falling to the wayside.  Perhaps I should do something about this?  Spend 30 minutes every other day on one of these goals next month?  What do you think?

Personal Goals

  • Continue the MWF posts for Rainy Day & Gamer Talk.
  • Blow my 100 mile goal for MYAC out of the water.
  • Lose 20 pounds.

I’m participating in MYAC, and man, that 100 mile goal was unrealistic for the first month.  I will honestly be happy if I get to 30 miles at this point. I think next month I’ll move it to 45 and we’ll progress from there.  The pounds aren’t necessarily shedding either, but the inches seem to be.  My clothing feels just a little bit looser, and I can comfortably be in my bridesmaid dress.  I have to kick things into gear though on the rest of this stuff.  I think that my weekly goal of mowing the lawn will be a big kicker for me in the exercise department as we have a big enough lawn that it takes me about 4 hours to mow.  I’m hoping I can shave that down to 3 1/2 next week depending on the heat.

Well, it seems I’ve been really lazy when it comes to my own goals, but when it comes to the house, landscaping, and prep for graduation party, I’ve been rocking it.  Now if only I could start getting these pounds to shed…

What should I add to my goal list?  Am I being a little too optimistic in trying to get a bunch of things done?  Of all of the ones I did NOT finish, which one should I crack down upon and accomplish in May?

Progress Report – Goals for April 2013

In an effort to keep myself accountable, here I go in seeing what goals I have accomplished, what I still need to do, and which ones should be moved to next month.

Alright, although I haven’t found a new way to make money, I was offered a chance to work for my comic books by watching the store and manning the sales while my friends are up at C2E2 this weekend.  I’ll be able to catch up on my subscriptions, and this will give me the future opportunity (perhaps) to do this more when my friend needs me to fill in for him and an easy way for me to save a little extra money while I’m still unemployed.  Unfortunately, there is just not a lot of things that are selling ebay and amazon right now.  February was a whole different story, but now that people are no longer getting tax checks and instead are making tax payments.. I’m not having that much business.  I’m hoping it will pick up in May and June.  Still no job, but so far, I’ve spent very little money on myself this month, and I’m hoping to keep it that way..

Rainy Day Goals

  • Convert my brother’s, my guy’s, and my own music to the existing external hard drive for easy access.
  • Organize my dvd/blu-ray collection.
  • Get rid of at LEAST 20 items this month, via selling, donation, or throw-away.

Goal Achievement Report – March 2013

Time to see what all I achieved this month! Honestly, I feel like I didn’t do much, but maybe I’ll be surprised.

Money Goals

  • Find a few ways for this Rainy Day blog to make some funds, however small it may be…
  • Sell unneeded items on ebay and amazon to make extra $.
  • To make enough money this month to pay my car payment ($301).
  • To spend less than $100 on me.
  • To find a job.

Unfortunately, I had no luck on the ebay front this month, so that hindered me earning enough money from sales to pay off my car payment.  I DID however make enough from sales in February to take care of the bridesmaid dress! That made me extremely happy. I also bombed the $100 and finding a job goals.  So, according to all of this, I really bombed the Money goals.

Rainy Day Goals

  • Convert my mother’s music to an external hard drive for easy access.
  • Organize my dvd/blu-ray collection.
  • Get rid of at LEAST 20 items this month, via selling, donation, or throw-away.
  • To continue organizing my room for optimal business format/personal use.

SUCCESS on the music to an external hard drive! In fact, I’m so happy with it right now, especially since we have so much more space on the 3TB drive that I’m also going to be converting my own, my brother’s, AND my guy’s to the hard drive as well!  20 items would have been easy had my sales on amazon and ebay gone better, but unfortunately this was also a bust.  The task for my mother’s music was daunting and I didn’t have the time to get my dvd/blu-ray collection organized.  Perhaps next month.

Personal Goals

  • Continue the MWF posts for Rainy Day & Gamer Talk.
  • Create a notebook/planner for each blog.
  • Create logos for both blogs.
  • Add artwork to various art sites and sell my artwork online.
  • Continue my art blog.
  • Refine my gamer podcast and restart it.
  • Lose 15 pounds.

Well, the Rainy Day was diligently given care.  And now that I have bought a notebook to hack for a planner, I’ll be able to jot ideas down when the mood strikes me.  My artwork didn’t go as planned, and I learned a key lesson on commissions, but don’t worry, I have a plan for getting my money and time back on that one.  The podcast was on hiatus as I was dedicating myself to the music project.  Oh, and I lost 12 pounds, but gained 4 back… that looks to be muscle weight however as my pants are slowly getting looser and my arms are getting more toned.  Hopefully this keeps working.

Overall, I still have a LOT of work to do, but I’m hoping that April brings me luck.  What about you? Did you have any monthly goals and achieve them?  Let me know, I do so love hearing from you and your experiences.  Every comment brightens my day!

Goals for March 2013

During the month of February, I focused on attacking my 101 Things in 1001 Days.  I got a pretty good chunk done too.  Unfortunately I had not been able to get anywhere near to making a month’s goals list, but March has more days and I have a feeling this month will be very productive!

Money Goals

  • Find a few ways for this Rainy Day blog to make some funds, however small it may be…
  • Sell unneeded items on ebay and amazon to make extra $.
  • To make enough money this month to pay either my car payment ($301).
  • To spend less than $100 on me.
  • To find a job.

Well, that should be enough right?  Let’s see if I can attain these or not.  The particularly interesting ones are going to be the money goals.
